Facial Volume Loss

What is Facial Volume Loss

As the body ages, the production of collagen slows down and facial fat volume is reduced. Collagen and the fat beneath the skin give the face that plump, moist, fresh appearance associated with youth. As the youthful elastic qualities of the skin are lessened, wrinkles and creases begin to appear. Modern cosmetic technology offers new solutions for aging skin on various areas of the face, and help give both men and women the ability to rejuvenate the facial appearance.

During the 20’s, the support beneath the facial skin begins to break down, creating a loss of definition in various areas of the face, including:

  • Cheek area
  • Eye sockets
  • Temples
  • Lips
  • Jaw area
  • Forehead

The loss of facial volume leaves the facial area looking tired, older, and often means wrinkles and sagging skin. Thankfully, our range of treatment options makes it possible to restore the look of youth that appears natural, fresh, and appealing.

Frequently asked questions

Of course a consultation with a specialist is key, however here are some of the ways that the process of facial volume loss can be slowed down and treated:

Prevention: Broad Band Light has an amazing affect on the skin including helping it to become healthier and plumper. Forever Young BBL is a revolutionary treatment that, according to a Standford University study, has been shown to slow down and even reverse the aging process. As well, doing what you can to avoid stress and weight fluctuations can help.

Dermal fillers: These injections of hyaluronic acid are safe and effective in treating facial volume loss. Dermal Fillers can be placed subtly in many parts of the face to address volume loss and help make the face look more defined.

One of the least invasive techniques for addressing lost facial volume is treatment with a hyaluronic acid-based filler. Hyaluronic acid (HA) replenishes the volume that lost fat has diminished. A filler treatment with Juvederm or RHA or Teosyal is a deep injectable option for volume loss in the cheek area. Formulated with cross-linked hyaluronic acid, which is a substance naturally produced in the skin. Filler treatments provide instant, natural looking results for up to one year. Treatment with Sculptra Aesthetic is another option to rebuild facial volume loss. This injectible treatment uses poly-L-lactic acid to stimulate collagen synthesis in the cheeks. With filler treatments, in a matter of minutes, years are taken off your appearance. More on Sculptra

Skin tightening: BBL Skin Tyte is a non surgical laser treatment that stimulates collagen growth, making the skin plumper, thicker and more youthful.

Skin care: Medical grade skin care have active ingredients that help to plump the skin and make it look more youthful.

V2 Beauty Booster This treatment uses tiny injections to deliver the product containing hyaluronic acid combined with essential nutrients, such as amino acids and vitamin B5.  This provides antioxidant protection, can prevent free radical damage, regenerate the skin and improve tissue integrity.  Treatments not only replace the hyaluronic acid that has been lost through ageing, they also provide your skin with intensive nourishment, hydration and volume.  Although similar to traditional fillers, which are used to create volume or change shape, V2 improves vitality and elasticity of the treated area.

The changes are subtle at first. We all start to loose volume in our faces as we approach age 40, and the effects are quite noticeable by age 50. Many women feel as though they don’t look as “pretty” as they did before, finding it harder and harder to capture a nice photo of themselves. You may be experiencing facial volume loss if you notice:

  • Change in overall face shape: Your face looks less “pretty” or if you are a man, “less handsome.” That’s because your “Ogee Curve” is off. The Ogee Curve is the double soft-S curves that are seen on youthful faces. Youthful faces show a convex fullness in the outside brow area that softly curves where the upper and lower eyelids meet, then softly curves outward on the upper cheek to again curve inward just above the mouth. As we age, the natural curve collapses and we look older and less pleasing.
  • Facial folds: You are noticing lines that go from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth and they are getting deeper over time (we call them naso labial folds) or lines that go form the side of your nose to the edge of your jaw by your mouth (we call them marionette lines). These are called facial folds and we have a whole web page about them.
  • Facial features are less pronounced: Your jaw line is less defined than before, as are your cheeks. Your face looks less sculpted.
  • Flattening cheek area: The mid face in particular is subject to volume loss. Once the mid face starts to shrink, gravity takes its toll and the structures below start to sag.
  • Boney areas become more noticeable: the boney area beneath your eyes is more noticeable – the plump cheek that was once there to camouflage it seems to have shrunk. Your cheek bones look very sharp but not in the super model kind of way.
  • Hollowing: You look hollow in the temple area.
  • Shadowing: You notice your chin area looks shadowed, as does the areas on either side of your nose above your mouth.

Is there anything you can do to prevent facial volume less? Yes and no. To a great degree, we will all lose volume by the time we are 40 regardless of what we do. However, they are some lifestyle characteristics that do accelerate facial volume loss. Here is a complete list of the forces that affect our faces:

  • Loss of collagen: This is a natural part of the aging process. Collagen keeps us looking plump and tight when we are young, and starts to deplete in our skin in our 30s.
  • Losing lots of weight : Which is great for how your body looks but ages your face.
  • Yo yo dieting – your face is continually contracting and expanding and eventually the skin can’t contract as well as it did before thanks to a natural loss of collagen and skin elasticity as we age.
  • Stress, illness and depression – There is not doubt about it, research shows that these can accelerate volume loss in the face

Facial Volume Loss & Changes in Face Shape: If you think your face looks differently shaped than it did when you were younger, you are right. Our faces change over time thanks to facial volume loss in the form of both fat and bone. Many patients notice subtle changes in their faces around their mid to late 30s, when facial volume loss begins. If you feel “less pretty than before” but you can’t explain why, then facial volume loss is likely the cause. Dermal Fillers are an excellent way to treat changes in the shape of the face and deepening lines and depressions as we age.

Skin Laxity & Sagging Structures: Intrinsic and extrinsic factors cause Lax Skin. The natural aging process, genetics, diet and exercise, stress and illness, lifestyle, sun exposure, weight fluctuations, exposure to toxins all make a meaningful contribution. We start to lose collagen in our skin in our 20s and when this is combined with facial volume loss in our 30s, we start to notice extra skin above and below the eyelids, facial folds and sagging structures such as jowls and turkey neck. Skin Tightening treatments stimulate collagen production and help make the skin denser and more youthful.

This is a common question a lot of patients inquire about and aren’t entirely sure which of the two is best suited for their skin concerns or what these treatment benefits are. Both the V2 Beauty Booster and micro-needling fall under the category of collagen induction therapy (CIT), these are non-invasive treatments that involve the repeated puncturing of the skin using very tiny, sterile needles. These controlled micro-injuries induce the production of collagen and elastin in the skin and are extremely beneficial for a variety of skin concerns.

An option for facial volume loss would be to have the V2 Beauty Booster Treatment. This procedure consists of 9 needles at a depth of 1mm that injects the Teoxane Redensity 1 product into the skin in the form of a gun. Teosyal Redensity I is a mix of non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid, amino acids, Vitamin B6 and antioxidants. One molecule of Hyaluronic acid holds 1000 times its weight in water therefore, this treatment is very hydrating for the skin. In addition to hydration, it activates fibroblasts within the dermis making them lay down new collagen and elastin. This produces thicker, tighter, more elastic skin on the face, lower eyelid, forehead, neck, décolletage and hands.

This treatment also helps to minimize the appearance of dull, crepey skin and gives your face a fabulous dewy glow. After one treatment using the V2 Beauty Booster you will start to see the skin plumping and filling, improved skin hydration and fewer fine lines and wrinkles. This is a versatile treatment that can be used to achieve tighter, firmer skin on the face, lower eyelid, forehead, hands, décolletage and neck.

Microneedling on the other hand is a great treatment for clients who suffer from common skin concerns such as melasma or mild acne scarring. It helps to reduce the appearance of sun damage hyperpigmentation, reduce fine lines because the controlled micro- injuries signal for the skin to produce collagen and elastin.

Methods we use to treat

The active ingredient in the Filler family of products is hyaluronic acid. The flexibility, texture, and resilience of youthful skin exist because of the high amount of water it contains. Also known as hyaluronan, hyaluronic acid is a sticky substance that our body naturally produces. The skin, eyes, and connective tissue are the sites where maximum amounts of hyaluronic acid are found. Its capacity to retain water up to almost a thousand times its weight is the key reason why it is used in cosmetic fillers. Apart from hydration, hyaluronic acid is also linked to tissue repair, rejuvenation, and has anti-inflammatory action. Hyaluronic acid also facilitates new cell growth and promotes tightness and volume of the skin.
If the idea of cosmetic surgery sends you running for the hills, but you’re determined to find a solution to freshen up your look, reverse the signs of aging, and target wrinkles, then a Soft-Lift could be the perfect solution for you. You may be asking, what exactly is this procedure? Well, firstly, it’s non-invasive which means there is no surgery involved. What it does involve is cosmetic injectables such as BOTOX Cosmetic® and JUVÉDERM® fillers, which smooth out the surface of your skin and re-define your facial contours. This means that those particular areas around the eyes and mouth can be visibly improved without the need for surgery or any invasive treatments. Not only is this type of procedure gentle, but it also excludes any use of lasers or skin tightening devices. A Soft Lift combines neuromodulators and fillers to reduce and treat those stark signs of aging that can weigh down your facial features and contribute to that tired appearance.
PRF refers to platelet-rich fibrin that is also known as leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF). PRF is an improved version of platelet-rich plasma or PRP therapy which is used widely to rejuvenate skin. Platelets are one of the components present in our blood along with red and white blood cells. The main function of platelets is to form fibrin that helps the blood clot during an injury, thereby preventing excessive bleeding. Platelets’ healing properties have been known to humans for centuries while medical researchers in recent times have found that these components speed up wound healing and recovery after certain surgeries. PRF is also extensively used to help promote wound healing, bone regeneration, and to control bleeding.
As we age and our skin matures, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven textures and tone bring about dull, discoloured looking skin that lacks vibrancy. However, advancements in dermal filler products and micro-needling applicators are making preventing premature aging and addressing the signs that already exist an affordable, quick and easy process. At LSG we take microneedling to a whole new level with our innovative Beauty Booster treatment. Our Beauty Booster procedure is designed to improve hydration, revitalize the skin, reduce laxity and provide the patient with skin that has a radiant glow. We accomplish this using the revolutionary Vital Injector 2 (V2) device. The Beauty Booster treatment provides patients with two treatments in one: A Microneedling procedure in conjunction with a Dermal Filler treatment. During this procedure, our Cosmetic Specialists use the V2 injector device to perform multiple micro injections across the areas that are being treated at the same time.
Sculpture Aesthetic is a terrific first-line treatment to give your face a youthful base prior to any fillers and skin-tightening treatments. In many cases, patients need significantly less or no longer require dermal fillers after Sculptra Aesthetic. By stimulating your own natural collagen, results last longer than fillers alone. Clinical studies show 87% continued to experience results two years after treatment. Results occur gradually over 3 months. No one will know what is different, but they will notice just how great you look!
