Rosacea & Redness

What is Rosacea?

When it comes to your complexion, most people agree – there is nearly nothing nicer than a rosy glow. Not so when you’re dealing with rosacea – a chronic skin condition that mainly impacts areas of the face, such as the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. Though there is no known cure for rosacea, an experienced, professional skin specialist can help you to treat and manage its effects for more beautiful skin.

Redness or an irritation of the skin can be caused by a number of conditions. The two most common are Poikiloderma and Rosacea.

Frequently asked questions

Redness or an irritation of the skin can be caused by a number of conditions. The two most common are Poikiloderma and Rosacea.

POIKILODERMA AND ROSACEA

Poikiloderma is a benign skin condition found along the sides of the neck, and mainly affects women. Causes are unknown, but contributing factors include:

  • sun exposure
  • fair skin
  • hormonal factors
  • reactions to certain cosmetics and toiletries, especially perfumes

Rosacea, on the other hand, is a skin condition that results in redness of the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin. It is common among people between the ages of 30-50 and those with fair skin. Rosacea can lead to:

  • facial redness
  • visible, broken blood vessels
  • sensitive, swollen, or dry skin
  • a burning or stinging sensation
  • acne and oily skin
  • bumpy, thickened skin

According to experts, rosacea is likely caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, such as a compromised immune system, possessing fair or light skin, a family history of rosacea, or suffering too much exposure to sunlight. In any case, the first signs of rosacea may be little more than a subtle, occasional blushing or redness of the skin. Over time, however, these symptoms can become more persistent and pronounced. Bumps, pimples and enlarged blood vessels may appear, giving skin a rough, uneven look. At times, though very rarely, symptoms may be severe enough that the skin tissue of the nose becomes thick, swollen and bumpy – this form of rosacea, called rhinophyma, mainly affects men.

A consultation with an experienced, professional skin specialist will determine which of the following types of rosacea you possess, and what the best course of treatment will be:

  • Mild (erythematotelangiectatic): Characterized by facial flushing and redness, which may only be present at times. You may also experience some swelling, burning and stinging, roughness and visible red blood vessels.
  • Moderate (papulopustular): This more-advanced form of rosacea is marked by persistent redness and pimple-like bumps that may be mistaken for acne, as well as burning and stinging.
  • Severe (phymatous): As mentioned above, rosacea may affect the nose, causing the skin tissue to thicken and become bumpy. This severe form of rosacea is called rhinophyma, and most often occurs when the condition is left untreated.

Though it can’t be completely cured, modern medical approaches have, in recent years, helped rosacea patients see tremendous improvement in their skins appearance. The best success is usually achieved through a comprehensive approach that includes suppression and prevention, correction, and ongoing (lifelong) maintenance and management:

  • Avoiding Triggers: The main stay of treating rosacea is the avoidance of trigger factors such as foods, stress, UV and products that can irritate your skin
  • Suppression and prevention The second tier is to use anti-inflammatory creams. SkinCeuticals provides and excellent range of products for rosacea prone skin. In some cases, anti-inflammatory prescription medication maybe required. Good results can be achieved with medical grade skin care products to control oil production which triggers and aggravates rosacea.
  • Correction: The third method is with laser or BBL – this is the mainstay of rosacea management.  Vascular laser treatment can help to remove visible blood vessels or reduce extensive redness by emitting wavelengths of light that target tiny blood vessels just under the skin. Heat from the laser’s energy builds in the vessels, causing them to disintegrate. Diagnosis via an in-depth skin analysis with our experienced medical laser aesthetician is essential to determining whether use of this powerful tool – or any other type of laser – will be beneficial

No, laser or BBL plays an important role in the treatment of rosacea by decreasing redness, capillaries, excessive tissue and inflammation. It is only a part of the big picture of rosacea management. Other things to consider include

  • A customised skin care regime
  • Avoidance of flare factors
  • The correct make up
  • Anti-inflammatory tablets and creams for flare ups
  • Management of stress levels

Methods we use to treat

The AFA peel is a type of chemical peel that has become an essential part of many men and women’s skincare regimen. AFA stands for Amino acid Filaggrin. It is an antioxidant that works to retain the moisture in your skin, leaving it looking fresh, renewed, and hydrated. AFA peels are also acidic. They work as effective exfoliants yet cause minimal irritation to the skin because they are made from the same type of amino acids found in the body. The AFA peel is actually one of the few chemical peels that do not make your skin sun-sensitive, making it the perfect option for all skin types.
Broadband light technology generates broad-spectrum light waves that penetrate deeply into the lower layers of your skin. The light is changed to heat energy as it reaches beneath the surface of the skin. As this special type of light saturates the epidermis, chemicals in your skin change light energy to beneficial heat energy that immediately begins repairing damaged skin by stimulating collagen production. Collagen is a protein-rich, structural compound necessary for supporting all your body’s tissues. It is also essential for providing firmness, suppleness and strength to your facial skin. Skin naturally produces less and less collagen as we age, a major contributing factor to wrinkling, sagging, dryness, and unattractive spider veins.
Every once in a while a treatment is introduced that takes us one step closer to the fountain of youth. The Forever Young BBL Photo-Facial is a big step in that direction and is one of the most advanced techniques available today to slow down, treat and reverse damaged and aged facial and non-facial skin.  This is the most effective and advanced form of photo-facial and photo-rejuvenation currently available due to the broadband light technology. The Forever Young BBL encompasses all of the advantages of the original BBL Photo-Facial procedure along with the newly recognized benefit of delaying skin aging. The treatment targets hyperpigmentation, sun damage, broken capillaries and diffused redness in the skin all while stimulating collagen. Forever Young BBL clients have seen great results on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms and other body parts.
