Sensitive Skin

What is Sensitive Skin

Most people think of sensitive skin as skin that is easily irritated. You may find that certain products or environmental factors cause you to get red, itchy, or even break out. Before you label your skin as sensitive, know this: having sensitive skin falls into a bit of a skin care grey area. There isn’t a definitive checklist that clinics use to define sensitive skin. The best way to establish your skin type is to pay close attention to your skin’s reaction.

Frequently asked questions

1. Your skin is reactive
If you have sensitive skin, you probably notice that soaps, detergents, fragrances, perfumes, skincare products, and household products may cause your skin to react whether it may be itchiness, dryness or reddening. In addition, exposure to cold, sun, and wind can trigger flares.

2. You notice redness
Most people with sensitive skin deal with some amount of redness. This can take the form of a red rash, red bumps, blushing and flushing, or even red dilated blood vessels. Usually, the redness will go away after removing the irritant or with minor treatment.

3. Your skin is dry
Dry skin and sensitive skin can go hand-in-hand. It can lead to acne breakouts and cracked skin. You will likely have more problems with dry skin in cold, dry weather and when exposed to wind. Using a gentle moisturizer and protecting your skin from the elements can help fight it.

4. You develop rashes often
Sensitive skin may react with a red, dry, flaky, or bumpy rash when exposed to a trigger. This is especially true for products that are left on your skin, such as facial creams. You may develop a rash very quickly after contact. Rashes can be uncomfortable, unsightly, and stubborn. If you’re allergic to something, however, it’s more serious than sensitive skin.

5. You’re prone to breakouts
If you have sensitive skin, you may develop breakouts that look like acne with red bumps and pustules. You may find that an acne wash or cream to treat the breakouts only worsens your symptoms

6. You sunburn easily
Your sensitive skin is more susceptible to the harmful effects of the sun. If your skin is already irritated or peeling, you are at an even higher risk. You should always wear a sunscreen when you’re outside, especially on your face. Since some ingredients in sunscreens can cause allergic reactions, look for ones with the ingredients zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. You’ll also want to choose a sunscreen that is broad-spectrum and has SPF 30 or higher.

At LSG we have many clients who present with complaints of “sensitive skin” and we offer a comprehensive, step-wise approach to improving this skin condition. The first consideration is to try to determine the cause or triggers. Common culprits may be inappropriate skin care products, make up, and sunscreens. We eliminate these triggers and replace them with non-irritative products. We calm the skin with advanced skin care products designed for sensitive skin. These products reduce the inflammation and hydrate the skin while optimizing the pH balance. We also perform Advanced Facials with calming products that soothe the skin. A personal consultation will determine the right products which calm the skin and improve the skin quality.

Once the skin is stabilized, we gradually add more active products and/or treatments to address dullness of the skin. This must be done cautiously based on the client’s skin type. One of the most common treatments to aid sensitive skin is our BBL Photorejuvenation device which addresses redness and flushing of the skin as well as collagen stimulation.

You may believe that due to your skin sensitivity, you’re a bad candidate for anti-ageing, scar-removal, or skin-brightening treatments. Here are some amazing treatments you can enjoy, as well as some things to avoid.

  • Oxygen Facials As you age, your skin naturally produces less collagen. Collagen is a protein in the skin that makes it flexible and elastic. In our youth, the high levels of collagen make the skin look plump and tight. In later years, the lack of collagen can lead to sagging and dullness in the skin.
Our Intraceuticals Oxygen Facial is amazing for promoting collagen growth. It’s also completely safe for sensitive skin. Through intraceutical technology, oxygen molecules infused with nutrients gently penetrate the outer layer of the skin. This non-surgical treatment is pain-free and non-invasive. It’s been known to help treat acne and severe dryness. The oxygen facial can balance the skin’s pH level and improve hydration. After the treatment, you’ll notice immediate results such as an even skin tone, smaller pores, and decreased fine lines. For a gentle and relaxing treatment, the results are impressive.
  • BBL PhotoFacials Do you suffer from rosacea or pigmentation issues? Perhaps you enjoyed the sun a little too much as a teenager, and now you see the skin damage years later. Whether you have rosacea, pigmentation, capillaries, or sun damage, our BBL is for you! This treatment is non-invasive and gentle on the skin. It’s highly unlikely to irritate sensitive skin or trigger an outbreak. Anyone who’s ever suffered from rosacea knows how strongly it can dampen your confidence. The photo facial could be the life-changing treatment you need to get your confidence back.
  • BBL Acne Treatment Did you know that 35% of women between 30-39 suffer from acne? That number is even higher for women in their twenties, and still somewhat prevalent in women over 40. Acne isn’t only an adolescent skin condition. Adult acne causes the skin to feel tender to the touch. The pimples and redness that come with acne cause insecurity and self-esteem issues. Using a blue broadband light we kill bacteria and cleanse the pores. The procedure is painless and safe; it won’t trigger sensitive skin or make sensitivity worse. It will, however, leave your skin clearer, smoother, and brighter.
  • Chemical Peels A chemical peel uses acids to cause visible shedding of layers of the skin while simultaneously infusing the skin with ingredients intended to diminish lines, build collagen, and improve tone and texture. Additionally, even if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, chemical peels will still benefit your complexion. Chemical peels can help treat a wide variety of concerns, by improving (and smoothing) your skin’s texture and clarity even conditions exclusive to those with sensitive skin like rosacea.
  • Medical Facials  treatments to consider are sheet masks, pore purification facials, and customizable restorative facials. Professional treatments and products should address three main symptoms of sensitized skin: redness, compromised barrier and dehydration. When it comes to treating the skin, a skin therapist should follow the “less rule”—less time, less product, less heat and less friction. Overdoing it on sensitive skin can accelerate inflammation and aging. Right now, we’re seeing the popularity of LED used during treatment to help with healing and repairing
  • Celluma LED Light Therapy – Light Emitting Diode (LED) phototherapy is the application of light energy to tissue to obtain therapeutic benefits. The energy is used to improve cellular performance. Phototherapy is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties and has a variety of applications across many medical fields. Research has shown that phototherapy can: increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, decrease wrinkles, decrease inflammation, improve skin tone and wrinkles, texture and clarity, ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasm and arthritis and kill acne bacteria, and much more. Celluma is unique and quite unlike any other low-level light therapy device available today. Based on NASA research, Celluma delivers blue, red and near-infrared light energy simultaneously to safely treat a wide variety of conditions. Each wavelength is absorbed by different molecules that act as a signaling mechanism for different cellular processes. For example, some reduce inflammation and some kill bacteria, while others enhance localized circulation

One of our most popular skincare treatments is absolutely perfect for sensitive skin: the Hydrafacial MD. The HydraFacial MD is a facial treatment that is gentle on the skin, without the redness or irritation that can accompany other similar treatments and of course can be customized for you.

One of the reasons the HydraFacial MD is so incredibly popular is because it is very customizable. Every step of the treatment can be altered, depending on your skin type and needs. For those with less sensitive skin, perhaps a strong acid peel might be in order. If you have sensitive skin, we might use a much lighter peel or even skip that step entirely. Prior to treatment, we will have a conversation about your skin where we can determine how to make the HydraFacial MD perfect for your needs.

The HydraFacial MD is made up of four parts:

  1. Cleaning and Exfoliation

The first part of the HydraFacial MD involves removing any dead cells or other debris from the surface of the skin. Using a specialized spiral tool, we gently exfoliate and clean the skin, leaving it smooth and ready for the next steps. This spiral tool is incredibly customizable, meaning we can use it at whatever intensity that is specific to your sensitive skin.

  1. Acid Peel

Next up is the acid peel that we mentioned above. Unlike many stronger peels, the glycolic acid peel shouldn’t feel like anything more than a gentle tingle. But, again, if you have sensitive skin, we can use less of the acid, or even avoid this step altogether.

  1. Extractions

This is the fun part of the HydraFacial MD. We think there is a little part of all of us that enjoys removing blackheads and other imperfections from our skin. With the HydraFacial MD we avoid any skin damage using a special vortex vacuum tool to essentially vacuum out out the imperfections, which is far more gentle than physically extracting them with manual tools. Sometimes though, we still have some gunk to remove manually, but at least it’s easier after having used the vacuum tool.

  1. Hydration

If you suffer from dry, sensitive skin, then this might be your favorite part of the HydraFacial MD. Using the same vortex tool, but with a different nozzle, we infuse your skin with a variety of hydrating serums, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and other skincare products. We can tailor this hydration infusion based on the products that you know your skin handles well. If there is anything that you know causes any type of skin reaction, we simply don’t use it. Remember, the HydraFacial MD is customized to you!

First of all, you will want to see a skin-care professional experienced in treating clients with sensitive skin. Oftentimes, this means they are aware that less time, product, heat, or friction is needed to achieve the same results during a procedure. They may also recommend certain products known to be much gentler on the skin such as a laser facial or Hydrafacial

Second, make sure you take care of your skin appropriately, including:

  • Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers
  • Take warm – but not hot – baths and showers
  • Try changing your laundry detergent
  • Towel off gently – don’t rub your skin too harshly

If you have sensitive skin, you may suffer a wide variety of skin-related symptoms, depending on what is causing your sensitivity.

For example, your skin may be:

  • Blistered
  • Bumpy
  • Burning
  • Dry
  • Flaking
  • Flushed
  • Irritated
  • Itchy
  • Raw
  • Red
  • Scaly
  • Sore
  • Swollen
  • Tight
  • Tingling

Skin sensitivity is often the result of immune system activity or inflammation.

You may develop a rash in reaction to products like soap, shampoo, and makeup. People with allergies or skin conditions such as eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, or rosacea may be more likely to have sensitive skin. Interestingly, your sensitivity to particular products may change over time, coming on even after years of product use.

You may be overly sensitive to extremes in temperatures or the sun’s UV rays, becoming more easily sunburned. Stress and diet have been known to cause your skin to be more sensitive, causing acne and skin blemishes.

Whether your symptoms are mild or more severe, if your sensitivity issues are chronic, you have sensitive skin.

Methods we use to treat

The AFA peel is a type of chemical peel that has become an essential part of many men and women’s skincare regimen. AFA stands for Amino acid Filaggrin. It is an antioxidant that works to retain the moisture in your skin, leaving it looking fresh, renewed, and hydrated. AFA peels are also acidic. They work as effective exfoliants yet cause minimal irritation to the skin because they are made from the same type of amino acids found in the body. The AFA peel is actually one of the few chemical peels that do not make your skin sun-sensitive, making it the perfect option for all skin types.
Office-based chemical peels are essential for maintaining skin’s health and appearance and they are available exclusively through an authorized SkinCeuticals skincare professional. These peels work synergistically with SkinCeuticals home care to yield optimal results. Helps reduce visible signs of photoaging, including fine lines and wrinkles. Benefits of Professional Peels include: Improving the appearance of uneven skin tone and dullness by exfoliating surface cells. Softening and smoothing the skin’s surface texture. Decreases the frequency of acne breakouts and fades the appearance of post-acne discoloration. Maintains and enhances the benefits of a SkinCeuticals homecare regimen. Complements benefits of almost all of our other in-office procedures
Broadband light technology generates broad-spectrum light waves that penetrate deeply into the lower layers of your skin. The light is changed to heat energy as it reaches beneath the surface of the skin. As this special type of light saturates the epidermis, chemicals in your skin change light energy to beneficial heat energy that immediately begins repairing damaged skin by stimulating collagen production. Collagen is a protein-rich, structural compound necessary for supporting all your body’s tissues. It is also essential for providing firmness, suppleness and strength to your facial skin. Skin naturally produces less and less collagen as we age, a major contributing factor to wrinkling, sagging, dryness, and unattractive spider veins.
A medical grade facial uses both medicinal and natural corrective measures to help erase the signs of stress your face is showing. These facials target the root cause of your skin problems, whether it be the need to remove toxins with powerful antioxidants or the need to counter years of UV ray exposure. Our patients see a tremendous improvement in their conditions because of the way we target the underlying cause of their problems. Our  facials are results-driven, meaning we create a unique facial for each client based on their specific skin needs and goals. The experience is very relaxing, but you’ll notice real changes in your skin due to the active ingredients and solutions used in our treatments.  That why we use the term “Medi-Facial” – it’s simply an enhanced facial geared towards achieving specific results.
Our Celluma Low-Level Light Therapy is the only all-in-one low-level light therapy device designed to manage a variety of pain and skin conditions. Cleared by the FDA for pain management and skin care, Celluma uses light energy to improve cellular health by accelerating the repair and replenishment of compromised tissue cells. Celluma Low-Level Light Therapy is a non-invasive, painless treatment, which requires no recovery time, and can be used on all skin types. In just minutes a day, you can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while experiencing an improvement in skin texture, quality and smoothness. Using wavelengths that are scientifically proven to stimulate fibroblasts to increase collagen and elastin.
