What is Medical Grade Skin Care

Medical Grade skin care products differ from the products you can purchase from your local drugs store, Walmart or over the counter in department stores. Cosmeceuticals contain ingredients that penetrate below the top layer of skin, unlike store products which are not able to affect the skin in a biological way. Cosmeceuticals contain ingredients you can often find in prescription grade skin-care expect in milder doses. Examples of these ingredients are retinol, peptides and antioxidants.

The key with effective skincare isn’t just to do with the ingredients, it also has to do with the formula and how the products are produced. In order to maintain a lower price point many drug store brands cut corners on their formula, and production. While medical grade skin care comes with a higher price tag, its often due to the fact that the product is developed to a higher standard with quality ingredients to provide proven, effective results.

Frequently asked questions

The concentration of active ingredients in over the counter (OTC) skin care products is greatly limited to avoid harming people with the greatest sensitivity to those ingredients. On the other hand, medical-grade skin care products contain a higher concentration of active ingredients because they are only dispensed by medical professionals trained to evaluate whether that concentration is appropriate for each client. The ingredient lists of most OTC products do not contain the ingredient concentrations, which makes it difficult or impossible for the consumer to compare OTC and medical grade products.

Depending on your goals and the condition of your skin, OTC products frequently produce much poorer results than the those obtained from a medical grade line. Medical grade skin care products are strong enough to reach, and correct problems in, deeper layers of the skin than OTC products.

Most likely your skin has been exposed to a combination of external and intrinsic factors that contributed to its current condition. Seeking out a skin care professional to learn where your dollars can make a more significant impact towards the results you are seeking

TALK TO A PROFESSIONAL

Complimentary advice from licensed aestheticians or trained skin professionals is available. A consultation that includes an in-depth skin evaluation together with a customized treatment plan is the best path to great skin.

Medical-grade products are highly recommended for clients to achieve their skin care goals. Medical-grade means they are available from establishments that operate under a medical director for the retailer to sell these products.

With SkinCeuticals it is easy to remember, just layer by viscosity! The thinnest (most aqueous product) goes first and layer up! The only exception to this rule is if you are using a retinol product in the evening, in this case, always apply your retinol first.

And in the a.m., your Vitamin C serum always goes first!

This is one of the most commonly asked questions with every line. SkinCeuticals makes it easy for clients, you with the exception of their Vitamin C products, Retinol and Resveratrol you can use the rest of the skincare line everyday twice daily.

There are a couple of reasons you will want to use your Vitamin C, Resveratrol and Retinol once per day and either in the morning or at night:

  1. As the skin cannot absorb large amounts of Vitamin C, applying it morning and night will not provide any added benefit to your skin, in fact you will just be wasting your product.
  2. Vitamin C serums are best used in the morning as the Vitamin C helps protect your skin against environmental aggressors.
  3. Retinol serums make your skin sun sensitive so for this reason, with any retinol it is is best applied only at night time.
  4. The Resveratrol serum is best used at night time only as sunlight will breakdown the resveratrol molecule which will decrease its efficacy for your skin.

Much like an apple goes brown up on cutting, your Vitamin C serum will change colour upon opening, this is totally normal and does not affect the efficacy of the product. The serum if used correctly should last only 3 months, the shelf life of the SkinCeutical Vitamin C serums upon opening is 6 months.

  • Cleanser – water bottle cap
  • Serum – coffee bean about 4-5 drops
  • Eye – grain of rice and then press between the pads of 2 fingers and apply to each eye
  • Face Mask – loonie
  • Sunscreen – quarter

Unlike other lines, SkinCeuticals uses Ferulic Acid to stabilize its Vitamin C from oxidizing, and do not use any dyes, colours, perfumes or other preservatives. This is why many find the scent of one of their most popular serums, CE Ferulic to smell like hot dogs!

ANTIOXIDANT SCIENCE

Properly formulated topical antioxidants have been shown to neutralize skin-damaging free radicals. Some improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. But what are antioxidants, how do they work, and what other benefits do these active molecules have for the skin?

WHAT IS AN ANTIOXDIANT?

An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a type of damage that occurs when molecules lose electrons. Five types of antioxidants can be found naturally in the body that protect against cellular damage. Antioxidants work by different mechanisms to stop or neutralize damage. Out of the five antioxidants found in the body only vitamins C and E have been proven to get into skin. Additionally, there are a few plant antioxidants known to work in skin.

THE ANTIOXIDANT AUTHORITY

In 1997, SkinCeuticals changed the face of skincare with the introduction of Serum 10 and Serum 15, the company’s first stabilized, pure L-ascorbic acid topical antioxidants SkinCeuticals founding scientist Dr. Sheldon Pinnell conducted research about antioxidant formulation and discovered specific formulation factors, now known as the Duke Antioxidant patent. SkinCeuticals is the only brand to formulate antioxidants according to these standards.
