Sun Damage & Sun Spots

Sun Damage & Sun Spots

Looking for a non-surgical treatment for sun spots? At Laser Spa Group, we can help restore a more youthful appearance to your skin. As the years pass, many people are unhappy with the appearance of sub damage on the face, hands, shoulders, arms or other areas of the body. Age spots come about through sun exposure or the use of tanning beds. Exposure to UV rays causes the upper layer of skin to accelerate the production of melanin, a brown-to-black pigment. When the skin has been exposed to UV rays over the years, age spots begin to appear. The melanin clumps or is produced in a high concentration, leading to unattractive dark spots that say “age.”

The advanced laser treatments used at LSG are capable of targeting and remove age spots, freckles, or brown spots, whether they are the result of exposure to UV rays, acne, trauma, or genetics. These spots can be difficult or impossible to conceal with cosmetics, but new laser technology can remove age spots and give your skin a fresher, younger appearance. Age spots can be successfully removed from:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Decolletage (cleavage)

Brown spots and skin pigmentation can be due to a variety of causes, and a diagnosis is absolutely essential before treatment. If diagnosed incorrectly, pigmentation can actually WORSEN with treatment. A classic example is melasma – skin pigmentation that is caused by excessive overproduction of melanin (brow pigment) by skin cells. This condition should be treated with creams and peels before laser.

  1. Sun-induced hyperpigmentation

Sun exposure (actinic pigmentation), freckles, and skin ageing

One of the primary functions of melanin production in your skin is to protect you from UV rays from the sun. A “tan” is the prime example of your body’s melanin response to the sun.

When the skin is assaulted by repeated exposure to the sun, you experience sun damage in a variety of ways and one of those is brown spots and hyper-pigmentation resulting from an over-production of melanin. Once the cycle of pigment over-production has started, it is difficult to stop it and usually medical intervention is required.

  1. Hormonal hyperpigmentation (melasma or chloasma) caused by hormone changes

The second most frequent cause of hyper-pigmentation is hormone changes. This may be a result of birth control pills, pregnancy or the various stages of menopause. Hormone shifts trigger the melanin cells to go into over-drive. This can happen even if you are not a sun worshipper. Sun exposure will always make it worse.

  1. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by injury

The third most common cause of pigmentation is a direct result of some type of injury to the skin. Typical pigmentation-causing injuries include:

  • Improperly performed laser treatments
  • Acne or Acne Cysts
  • Over-exposure to heat
  • Hair waxing
  • Insect bites or itchy rashes
  • Abrasions or cuts

Inflammation is your body’s response to injury. Often inflammation is not obvious because it is occurring at a deep level. This inflammation triggers melanin production and the result is a concentration of pigment in the affected area. A common result of improperly performed hair laser is a proliferation of dark patches on the legs or face. There are a variety of hair lasers on the market and not every one is designed for every skin type and color.

Sun exposure is the primary cause of facial and body brown spots, age spots, freckles, moles and pre-cancerous actinic keratosis. Preventing sun-induced hyperpigmentation is a full time process. Hormones, injury and pigmentation from allergic reactions or skin disease such as acne are mostly beyond your control.

Sunscreen, sunblock, hats and sun-protective clothing are your first line guard against not only unsightly brown patches but also sun damage that could lead to skin cancer.

We have introduced a new UVA protection product called Bluestone Sunshields. Full face protection post procedures and from the sun!

Most of our treatments are laser and light based procedures. This gives the greatest improvements in skin pigmentation and age spots. The ideal treatment will depend on your diagnosis. Very mild skin pigmentation and brown spots can respond to creams, conversely long standing pigmentation will only improve with lasers.

The 6 methods to improve skin pigmentation include –

Creams and Skin Care – these are prescribed to help maintain your skin after laser treatment for pigmentation. They can also be helpful in reducing pigment due to melasma, and very mild forms of sun damage. We like to recommend combination ingredients that contain Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHAs, as well a bleaching and pigment correcting agents. Sunscreen forms the basis of your daily skin care regime.

Chemical peels– can be used for mild pigmentation and freckles.

Lasers – this is the mainstay of removing age spots, sun spots and pigmentation. Depending on the depth of pigmentation, we use specific lasers. FRAXEL is a great option for deeper pigment, however we do combine PicoWay, Clear and Brilliant Permea and BBL in most of our laser programs. Clear+Brilliant is an excellent laser to maintain your skin after skin pigmentation has been treated. PicoWay is an excellent option for spot treatments as well.

BBL  Photorejuvenation – an advanced form of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is one of the most effective treatments for dark spots. BBL is a treatment that works to rejuvenate the skin by encouraging skin cell turnover and new collagen production. On dark spots, this treatment reduces the unnecessary melanin that produces excess pigment.

Medical Facials – Facials such as SilkPeel Dermalinfusion, Hydrafacial MD, DMK Facials or Oxygeneo, or Intraceuticals Oxygen treatments are some non invasive ways to help reduce superficial pigment and to help maintain results post laser treatments.

Microneedling – Can be an additional option for superficial pigmentations or as a maintenance treatment after skin pigmentation has been treated

Some types of pigmentation can be improved with creams. Dark pigmentation such as melasma a classical example where we use creams and gentle peels instead of laser to treat this condition. Mild freckles and very early sun induced pigmentation can be improved with a mixture of Vitamin A creams, Vitamin C serums, AHAs and bleaching agents and pigment regulating creams.

In most cases of pigmentation, lasers are needs to markedly improve your skin texture.

Methods we use to treat

Broadband light technology generates broad-spectrum light waves that penetrate deeply into the lower layers of your skin. The light is changed to heat energy as it reaches beneath the surface of the skin. As this special type of light saturates the epidermis, chemicals in your skin change light energy to beneficial heat energy that immediately begins repairing damaged skin by stimulating collagen production. Collagen is a protein-rich, structural compound necessary for supporting all your body’s tissues. It is also essential for providing firmness, suppleness and strength to your facial skin. Skin naturally produces less and less collagen as we age, a major contributing factor to wrinkling, sagging, dryness, and unattractive spider veins.
Dermal Infusion is a non-invasive skin treatment that combines three areas of skin rejuvenation: exfoliation, extraction, and serum infusion. Your technician will best determine a custom blend of serums for you based on your skin concerns and desired results. The Dermal Infusion device has a chamber that is loaded with your custom blend of serums, which are infused into your skin during the treatment. The pen-like instrument has a diamond-tipped head that exfoliates, plus a vacuum that dislodges dirt and debris from pores, while the hidden chamber infuses the serum blend into your freshly exfoliated skin.

Fraxel laser is one of the best lasers in the World. This laser can be used to treat skin pigmentation, wrinkles, acne scars and sun damage. It will give your skin a whole new texture and brilliance to it. Fraxel laser is gentle on your skin, with a recovery rate of 4-6 days. We recommend 1-5 treatments depending on your skin condition. Fraxel is considered a ‘fractional treatment’, meaning that it creates hundreds of deep columns through the skin called microscopic treatment zones. This means only a percentage of the skin is affected during each laser pass, reducing healing time, promoting natural regeneration of collagen, and rejuvenating skin cells. Due to the fact that Fraxel laser works through non-ablative resurfacing, the epidermis, or top layer of skin, is not directly impacted. As a result, patients can expect faster healing after treatment.
Younger patients are focusing on prevention and are more and more curious about how they can combat the development of lines and wrinkles. Whether you just noticed your first crease, want to be proactive about the aging process, or just want a gentle, yet effective, laser resurfacing treatment, Clear & Brilliant is your perfect treatment. Designed with a powerfully precise laser energy to stimulate collagen, Clear & Brilliant quickly and effectively treats the signs of aging to reveal more youthful looking skin
Laser tattoo removal is a simple procedure that uses a special laser (a high-intensity beam of light) to safely remove tattoos that a person no longer wants. The darker, contrasting colors used in a tattoo absorb the wavelengths of the laser, effectively breaking its colors into fragments, while protecting the surrounding skin, which doesn’t absorb the laser due to the contrast differences. Throughout treatments, your tattoo gets progressively light and lighter until it eventually disappears altogether. Mild discomfort should be expected, though far less discomfort than was experienced in getting the tattoo.
Resurfacing refers to the ablation or removal of skin tissue so new healthy tissue can be formed. Fractional skin resurfacing means that specific small areas, a fraction of the skin’s surface, are removed in a precise pattern leaving the surrounding healthy skin intact. The small sections of untreated healthy skin that are left intact facilitate rapid healing of the treated areas, resulting in very high patient satisfaction. If you’re looking for a natural way to improve your skin’s texture, elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles, look no further than Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for facial rejuvenation. PRP works with your body’s natural healing processes to repair and rejuvenate the skin. The treatment involves the extraction of a small sample of your blood, which is then placed in a centrifuge to separate your red blood cells from your plasma. Using our U225 meso-gun, the concentrated Platelet-Rich Plasma is injected into the areas being treated. Our plasma contains platelets that, once injected, release essential growth factors that promote collagen production, healing, and tissue repair, among other things. The treatment immediately gets to work rejuvenating the treated areas and producing a more radiant appearance.
